Aspirational class - 새로운 지식 계급 혹은 소득수준 상위 1% 수준에서 조금 달라진 소비 형태에 대한 분석이다. 소득 수준 상위 그룹들이 향유하는 과시성 소비재가 일반 대중들에게 잘 알려지지 않거나, 하위 계층들에서 누리기 어려웠던 것이 과거의 소비 형태였다. 하지만 20세기 후반부터 이런 대부분의 소비재들이 일반 대중들이 접하기 쉬워졌고, 또한 실제 구입할 수 있게 되었다.물론, 정확히 같은 물건들은 아니지만, 비슷한 물건들 혹은 전에는 생각만 했던 물건들을 실제로 구매할 수 있게 되면서, 이런 유형의 소비재들을 통한 계층 표현은 약화되었다. 하지만, 보이지 않는 무형의 경험을 다음 세대에게 전달하는데 비중을 두기 시작하는 세대들이 등장하면서 이런 계층들을 Aspirational Class 라고 하고, 또한 이런 계층의 사람들이 대도시 - metropolitan - 들에 모이면서, gentrification 과 연결되고. 많은 대도시들에서 나타나는 소비 유형들에 대한 분석이다. 어쩌면, 이런 무형 자산의 이전은 계층 이동을 더 어렵게 만드는 요인이 될 수도 있다. 실제 이런 경계에 있는 우리 가족의 입장에서는 조금 고민스러운 부분들이 생긴다. 이런 경험의 경로는 어느정도 알지만, 실제적인 제약으로 할 수 없음을 알고 있으니 경험의 한계를 느낀다.
