저자의 이력이 재미있다. 언어가 좋아서 언어특기병으로 군대에 복무하다, 통신장교가 되어서 수학/과학을 강제로 배워야 하는 상황을 만나고, 공부하다가 공대교수가 된다. 어렸을때는 재능이 없다고 생각했던 분야에서 자기가 모르던 역량을 발견하고 발전시킨 경험이 있는 것이다. 내가 기억하는 정규 교과과정 어디에서도 배우는 방법에 대해서 배우는 과정은 없었다. 그냥 자기 나름의 방법으로 학습을 진행하고, 개인이 가지고 있던 방법이 우연하게 효과적이면 잘하고 똑똑한 학생이 되고, 그 반대의 경우는 낙제생이 되는 시스템이었다. 타고나기를 잘 배우게 타고 나거나 주변에서 보고 배운 것이 유용한 방법이었던 것이다. 하지만, 최근의 뇌과학의 발전과 여려 연구를 통해서, 효과적인 학습방법 자체에 대한 논의들이 늘어나고 있다. 실제로, 어떤 영역에서 특별한 재능을 타고나서 잘하는 경우도 있다. 하지만, 효과적인 방법을 배운다면 상위 1%가 될 수는 없어도 상위 10%는 될 수 있다. 많은 사람들은 효과적인 방법을 몰라서 그런 배움 자체를 못하고 있는지도 모른다. 이책은 저자가 어린 독자들을 대상으로 조금 더 쉽게 풀어쓴 책이라서 더욱 잘 읽히기도 한다. 수면과 복습의 중요성, 또한 운동의 중요성을 말한다. 몇시간씩 계속 집중해서 무언가에 몰입하는 것은 누군가에게는 불가능에 가까운 일이다. 하지만, 30분정도라면 대부분의 사람이 가능하다. 이런식으로 실제로 독자들이 다른 내용들을 공부하면서 적용할 수 있는 팁들을 주기도 한다. 나중에 저자의 온라인 강의도 한번 들어보고 싶다.

It a little like a closet. The picture walk gives you "hangers" where you can organize the information you're reading. Without hangers, the clothes just fall on the floor in a jumble.

Once you get started on the task you don't want to do, the pain goes away after about twenty minutes. The insular cortex calms down when you start the task you were avoiding. It's happy that you're finally getting on with the job.

It reminded me what it was like to be a student and to have to struggle with difficult material. Teachers often forget this because they're experts in their subjects. They sometimes don't understand why kids find things difficult. It's good to be reminded that beginners usually do find things tough.
